Report
A first league game in over a month was a welcome fixture after numerous cup matches. Playing away at the unfancied Bromsgrove Brentnal, Chaps were forced to ready themselves on the roadside in full public view, much to Cully's delight. A number of missing personnel today—Penny ends his 7 game run with a persistent back injury, Feasey was away watching the Villa lose and Slater was dipping his toes in the Autumn sea. Farr returned for his first start in 3, alongside King and the ever present Tomolinson, behind a packed midfield.
Chaps started well and deservedly took the lead on 13 minutes after Whalley, playing a one–two with the wall from a free kick position, arrowed his return right into the top left corner of the net, keeper no chance.
From here things went downhill as lowly Brentnal grew in confidence and scored headers from two corners, the second of which should have been disallowed as Thornton was badly fouled by the attacker and couldn't attempt to stop the cross. I think the less said about the officials' performance today the better, though I will touch on the superb challenge by King in the second half that was incorrectly ruled as a foul, resulting in a penalty to Brentnal.
Midway through the first half, a suspect Cromwell—together with captain Garvey—both went for the same ball, with Cromwell coming off worse. A worrying leg injury took him out of the game, here's hoping our record appearance holder can recover in time for next week's fixture.
An extended videoprinter service today should provide an accurate first-hand review of the game from pitchside. A very poor defeat today. As Siliman put it, "...they were terrible but we were terriblerer..." During the first 15 minutes the opposition didn't look like the had a chance at all to handle the Chaps, but as the game went on they grew in confidence and their work rate in the second half won the game for them.
Chap of the match today has to go to Thornton in goal, sneaking in narrowly just ahead of the spirited Farr. Despite conceding 4, none of these were from open play and JT made a string of superb saves in the first half to keep the Chaps in the game. Well done John.
